About Us

Bar Harbor Whale Museum was established to introduce visitors to the marine life of the Gulf of Maine especially whales, seals. Interest in these animals during the past centuries was mainly commercial. Whales were hunted so intensely for oil, whalebone (baleen) and meat that many are still endangered, even today.

Fortunately many of these animals are recovering but it is because of concerned people and their efforts. Today people are more interested in understanding and enjoying these wild animals than in exploiting them for the products they once provided.

We hope you come and enjoy our exhibits and gain an increased awareness of the roles each of us play in conserving these animals and their habitat.

So, what can you do to help? Learn about the ocean and its habitants. Support research and conservation efforts. Take better care of the environment.
